StageP7
Experiences and OutcomesHWB 2-07a: "I am learning skills and strategies which will support me in challenging times, particularly in relation to change and loss."
HWB 2-19a: reflecting on my strengths and skills to prepare for the next stage in my life and learning.
(Health and wellbeing Es and Os, Education Scotland)
Learning intentionWe are learning to name our feelings about moving to S1 and plan ways to cope.
Success criteriaI can name a hope and a worry. I can suggest one thing I can do and one person I can ask for help.
TimeWhat happens
0 to 5 minHook: "Thumbs up, sideways or down: how do you feel about S1 today?" No explanations needed.
5 to 15 minHopes and worries: each pupil writes one hope and one worry on sticky notes, unnamed. Sort them on the board into themes: getting lost, friends, work, older pupils, teachers.
15 to 30 minPlan it: groups take one worry theme and write "What I can do" and "Who I can ask" for it, for example, "I can keep a map in my planner" and "I can ask a buddy or my guidance teacher".
30 to 40 minShare: each group gives its two best ideas. Build a class "S1 survival guide" on the board.
40 to 50 minMy plan card: pupils complete a small card: "My hope… My worry… I will… I can ask…" They keep it in their bag or pencil case.
  • Support: give sentence starters and a picture menu of feelings.
  • Challenge: write advice for next year's P7s.
  • Sensitive note: some pupils may find transition hard because of other changes or losses. Keep it unnamed, give a quiet option, and follow up privately with anyone who seems worried. Pupils with additional support needs often have enhanced transition planning in place.

Questions

When should P7 transition activities start?

Many schools start in the spring term, before the secondary visit days, and build up in May and June. Pupils who need extra support often start earlier, so check what your cluster secondary has planned.

Which CfE outcomes cover transition?

Health and wellbeing outcomes such as HWB 2-07a, on skills and strategies for change and loss, and HWB 2-19a, on reflecting on strengths to prepare for the next stage, fit well. Timetable tasks link to numeracy MNU 2-10a.

How do I help a P7 who is anxious about high school?

Give them space to name the worry, make a small practical plan together, connect them with a named adult at the secondary and tell their parents or carers. Follow your school's wellbeing procedures if you're concerned.

Are these activities free to use?

Yes. Use, print and adapt them for your class.

Can you make a transition week plan for my class?

Yes. Email [email protected] with "Teachers: P7 transition" as the subject, with your dates and what the secondary is doing. We'll send back a plan to check and adapt.
